This week we’re celebrating the greatness of three folks who share the same birthday: Joey Ramone, Pete Townsend and Andre the Giant. What stars aligned to bring these three utterly unique individuals into the world on May 19, we may never know, but their collective awesomeness remains undiminished.
Pete Townsend is one of the greatest songwriters in history, not to mention a pure force of nature on the guitar, windmilling his way to blood splattered rock and roll glory. As the Who’s ultimate creative force over the last 40 plus years, Townsend has sold over a hundred million records, wrote the concept albums Tommy and Quadrophenia. He plays ten instruments. Rolling Stone Magazine voted the tenth greatest guitar player of all time, and he’s in the the Rock and Roll Hame of Fame. Not bad.
And the songs – what great song. Here’s a stripped down version of “Let My Love Open the Door.”
