Born into poverty in New Orleans in 1901, Louis Armstrong’s mother was a prostitute, and he spent part of his youth as a coal delivery boy making the rounds of the various brothels in Storyville, the city’s famed red light district. Despite these humble beginnings, Armstrong was a joyful personality who became one of the great jazz trumpeters of all time, a beloved American icon possessing a never to be matched voice that was pure gravel-icious. Happy birthday Pops!
