It was on this day back in 1964 that Sam Cooke was shot dead at the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles. Cooke was shot by the manager of the motel, Bertha Franklin, who claimed to have a shot a nearly nude and crazed Cooke as he tried to attack her. Ultimately, the shooting was ruled a justifiable homicide by police.

Though Cooke was only 33 years he was already a soul music legend who charted 30 Top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, including “Twistin the Night Away” which was featured in the classic film Animal House.
